没有本质的区别。因为动词或介词后跟的doing sth.，实际上是其动名词形式，也就是当做名词看待和使用，相当于sth。doing sth和sth本质上都属于名词词性。focus on sth，专注于某事/物。此处把swim动名词化变为swimming，成为了“游泳”这一事物，是名词词性，既可以理解为focus on doing，也可理解为focus on sth，两者没有本质区别。
focus on 的具体用法是什么
focus on ，接名词、代词或者doing动名词形式或者名词性从句，意思是集中做什么。

focus on doing还是do
是focus on doing，没有focus on do的说法。
focus on doing是“集中精力做某事”的意思，具体的句式是Focus on doing sth。
例如：

所以我当时想我也许就专注在我真正在乎的一项事情上，并把它做得很好，不要在意别人会怎么想。
focus on用法：
1、把（光）在…上聚成焦点
If you focus bright sunlight on dry wood with a magnifying glass,it will start burning .

2、重点是；中心是
This year our meeting focuses on the question of children’s rights.
